Rupert Spiers' Restoration Theatre website is a nicely presented online introduction to late seventeenth-century London theatre, designed for use by undergraduates. The site is divided into six main sections: historical background; the theatres; the theatre companies, actors, and actresses; playwrights; critics; and bibliography. Each section is illustrated and annotated. Brief biographical information is provided for the important individuals of the era, along with a list of their key publications (or notable performances, in the case of the actors and actresses). There is a useful section on the design of Restoration theatres, with specific plans and illustrations of the theatres at Bridges Street, Drury Lane, and Dorset Garden. The historical context section is also likely to prove useful for students, succinctly covering events such as: the Restoration settlement; the Dutch Wars; the plague; the Great Fire of London; the Popish Plot; and the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1689, which resulted in William and Mary ascending the throne.
