Name: Collect Britain : illuminated manuscriptsInstitution: British LibraryAddress:St Pancras, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DBURL: http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/search/advanced.cfm?collection=Illuminated%20Manuscripts&step=val_formCountry: The United KingdomDescription:
The Illuminated Manuscripts website, part of the British Library's Collect Britain digitisation initiative, contains over 3000 images taken from the library's collection of illuminated manuscripts. The site is introduced by the curator, and contains images chosen from manuscripts dating from the seventh to the seventeenth centuries, including: annals; medical treatises; hagiographies; psalters; bestiaries; chronicles; and religious works. Celebrated manuscripts such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Sherborne Missal are represented, as would be expected, but perhaps more interesting are the images from the less showy manuscripts that constitute the greater part of the library's collection. The images chosen include: marginalia; heraldic art; illuminated and historiated initials and miniatures. This resource would be of use to all those interested in the cultural and intellectual history of the medieval period, as well as scholars and students of art history and manuscript studies. Users can browse the illuminated manuscripts collection by title and date or use the Collect Britain advanced search facility. Once selected, the images are presented with a short description and can be viewed either as a large image or as smaller image in which users can zoom and pan. Images in jpeg.
